PASSPORT APPLICATIONS
The Hungarian passport authority (Energiaügyi Minisztérium - Energy Ministry) issues biometric passports with electronically scanned fingerprints for applicants aged more than 12 years old. Fingerprints will be taken electronically at the time of the application. Therefore, passport applications must be submitted in person as a general rule.
Appointments are required and can be scheduled online. A separate appointment must be booked for each applicant (e.g. if you are applying for yourself and your child for a passport, you need to book 2 appointments). The appointments shown online are the earliest available. Each day, new appointment slots are added. Therefore, if no appointments are available, please wait until the next day and try again.
Expedited passport processing / Fast Track service is NOT available at the Consulate. Passport procedure is 20 days, which does not include delivery from Hungary to the Consulate. Thus, the average procedure time is 5-8 weeks (including delivery to the Consulate). If you cannot prove your citizenship when applying for a passport, the Consulate should start a procedure to verify your citizenship. In this case, this procedure might take up to 3-5 months as an average time but it could be much longer.
Please do not plan any journey (do not buy flight tickets, bus tickets etc.) before your passport has been delivered to you! The Consulate cannot guarantee that the passport is delivered within the above-mentioned average procedure time.
Passport fee
Consular fees are listed here. These vary e.g. on the basis of the length of the validity of the required passport, and – in case of minor applicants - also on the basis of the number of minors within the family. Please note that we are a cashless office, card payment only!

The validity period of the passport cannot be extended.

Important information and list of necessary documents:
- Please always bring the original birth certificate of the child.
If the birth of the child has not yet been registered in Hungary and the child doesn’t have a Hungarian birth certificate, the registration of the child's birth has to be initiated with the passport application. Please book your appointment accordingly! - All passport applications of children under the age of 18 have to be submitted by both parents (with parental responsibility) in person as a general rule. If only one of the parents is able to be present, the other should sign this consent letter. His or her signature on the letter must be authenticated. Please note that as of 1st July 2020, in case of a passport application, the statement of consent can only be accepted within 15 days of its signing.
In case only one of the parents (or the guardian) appears in person to submit the application, the parent or the guardian will have to sign the form printed and filled out by the administrator which will also serve as their authorisation for the passport to be issued for the child.
Additional necessary documents if
1. only one of the parents comes to the Consular Office, but both parents are on the Hungarian birth certificate:
- the original parental consent form of the absent parent must be attached, OR
- the termination, revoking or suspension of parental responsibility of the absent parent must be verified by presenting the original agreement of the parents set forth in a court of law, or the death certificate of the other parent, etc.;
2. the guardian visits the Consular Office with the child:
the guardian will need to present the original Hungarian guardianship order stating that the name of the father on the Hungarian birth certificate is that of an imaginary father only (i.e. there is no person to be considered as father).
Parental consent form can be done:
- Via the Client Gate (please click here to access it);
the parent coming to the appointment has to bring along the printed version of the electronic consent form with a QR code on it
or
- Consent form signed in front of two witnesses (please click here to download the form).
Forms must be filled out and signed with blue ink pen and the parent submitting the application must present the original form when visiting the Consular Office.
Regarding passport applications the form of parental consent must be dated within 15 days of the appointment, otherwise the Consular Office will not be able to accept it.
Decree of a Hungarian court can only be accepted if it can no longer be challenged and is absolute.
Court decree (e.g. child arrangement order) can only be accepted if
- the child has British citizenship, and/or
- the child’s actual habitual residence in the United Kingdom, and
- the decree specifically entitles and authorises one of the parents to apply for passport without the other parent’s consent (specific issue order).
The Consular Office is not able to accept the document if it only states which parent the child is placed with (live with order).
More details about British court orders and how to apply for them can be found here.
If you have three or more children in the household, we kindly ask you to fill out the relevant form as this may affect the fee you have to pay.
The form can be downloaded by clicking here.
In case you are not able to present the child’s valid passport, you must declare the loss/theft of the document in a report which will be printed out at the time of the appointment.
- Parents must identify themselves with a Hungarian passport, ID card, or driver's license in case of a Hungarian parent, and with a passport in case of a foreign parent.
- Under the age of 12, please bring a passport photo of the child. The photo should have a white background. A child under the age of 12 does not have to be present at the time of the application. However, if the child is over 12, he/she should appear at the Consulate in person together with the parents.
- If only one parent has custody over the child, the relevant document (e.g. court order or death certificate) must be presented as proof. In order to avoid any misunderstandings, please get in touch with us in advance via konz.edi@mfa.gov.hu
